1862 Diary of Isaac Hurlburt

January

Wednesday, January 1, 1862
By the Grace and Mercy of God I commence this New Year. I & Mary went & carried Aunt Isabel home to Pages 
Had warm thawed and become hard sleighing verry windy after noon, hevy squall in the evening
 
Thursday 2
Went to Hiram Pikes Osias and Elisa went with us visited Mother Hurlburt The verry feeble
Returned to Osias. Staid over night verry cold weather
 
Friday 3
We came home Brot home grist from green ten bushels wheat
Called at Waterman Barnetts
warmed and took tea
got home at evening all well
 
Saturday, January 4, 1862
Thrashed some and cleaned and put away some thirty od bushels oats
 
Sunday 5
Was at home
Anderson had a singing school at one oclock
 
Monday 6
I worked in the wood in the fore noon
Edmond came home from school at noon and drew one load wood to dort
one hundred and forty four feet
 
Tuesday, January 7, 1862
Edmond drew two load wood to Dort 144 feet each
I worked at giting out hemlock poles and drawing and scattering along the fences
wether good winter sleighing
 
Wednesday 8
Edmond drew two load wood to dort 144 feet each
I drew wood out of the woods
Anderson had Singing School Evening
Good Sleighing
 
Thursday 9
Parker drew two loads wood 144 feet Each
the first of his teaming of from home
Weather Thawy
 
Friday, January 10, 1862
I and Mary visited Wm Hurlburt and Family
found Persity verry feable
Ann and Bery came from School
Weather windy and thawy
 
Saturday 11
I drew wood out of the woods
Lyons choped A.M. put shoe on Bob sled PM
John Hurlburt and wife here staid all night
Parker and Sally went to Wm Hurlburts
Ann came home with them Staid all night
weather fair verry icy

Was at home
John & wife here till just at night
Douglass & wife here
Stafford & Isabel here
Anderson had Singing School at the Schoolhous
 
Monday, January 13, 1862
Drew some wood out of the woods for Mr Lyons to chop in the AM
Drew two logs in the PM for Eugen out of my woods into the sawmill
Good winter weather
 
Tuesday 14
Moved mashine and helped thrash Oast
Douglass helped with his Hors Floary to Mr Lyons
I came home about sick
Verry Pleasent weather
 
Wednesday 15
Unwell Stormy and windy AM
Moved home the thrashiong machine
charged Mr Lyons twelve shillings for thrashing
I drew two logs to mill for Eugean
the weather more mild PM
 
Thursday, January 16, 1862
I drew three Logs to mil from the west side Burlingam lot
of those Eugene cut Edmond drew one load wood to Dort 136 feet
Mr Lyons brot home faning mill cleaned 100b
Good Sleighing
 
Friday 17
I drew four logs to mill got chain [????????]
Edmond drew one load wood to Miss Hare for Dort 128 feet
Betsy Truesdell Hear
Good Sleighing Snowed about half the afternoone
 
Saturday 18
Snowed all the AM
I drew two logs PM
Edmond drew one load wood to dort 128 feet
Richerson Havens and wife here staid all night
 
Sunday, January 19, 1862
Mr Richison Havens went from here about noon
Anderson had Singing School at one Oclock
I and Mary Attended meeting at the Schoutons Schoolhouse in the eveining

I drew one log to the mill in the AM
Edmond drew one load wood to Dort 128 f
Rainy in the PM
Bealy Johnson here Staid all night
 
Tuesday 21
Edmond drew one and the last load wood to Dort 128 feet
I drew the last log cut

Wednesday, January 22, 1862
I went to the river
drove the spon of Fannys colts got the youngest one shod the first time
Boys went to school
I bot two shovels Sold some beaf
Mild weather Good Sleighing
 
Thursday 23
I drew three load wood home and drew out of the woods for Mr Lyons to chop
the Boys was at School
they and Sally went with Lyons Young to John Truesdells evening
Weather verry fine
 
Friday 24
I drew wood AM
Went to carry Mary to Miss Montgomerys
Fanny got shoe bint in Saw[?]
went to ??? got it set came back
brot Mary home in the evening
turned over in the woods
E Stevens went away

The school did not keep
We thrashed with Fany and Put [his horses]
George Marshel helped
Got News of a battle in Kentucky
Weather verry Snowy

Broke Road to Covys in the morning

Went and Helped Brake the road through to Steven Hurds
Mr Covy and Mr Homistan Jonson Hurd helped
Edwin Holcom and wife here AM
Good winter weather
Osias and Elisa came PM

Went visiting with F Havens and wife
Daniels came home at evening
Osias and Elisa here with Anderson and wife just starting for Singing School
Weather warm and misty

Broak Road to Miss Montgomerys drew hir three drags wood
and drew two load chesnut rail cuts AM
Cut and drew two load slead wood PM
Osias and wife visited to Staffords
Anderson and wife here they and children with Osias and wife
attended Singing School Schouton PM

Boys drew one load hay in AM the first this winter
Osias and wife came Here at evening from James Dimaras Staid over night
